The pool ball icon is trying to raise awareness of an important issue
IT HAS been randomly popping up on people’s Facebook feeds and left many scratching their heads about why.
Thousands of men have been updating their status by simply posting the eight ball emoji without any explanation.
But now the reason why people have been posting the symbol on social media has been revealed.
And it is nothing to do with sport or being a symbol of good luck – it’s all for a good cause.
The emoji is being used to promote awareness of prostate cancer among men online, as the number 8 refers to the gleason score.
The score is used by medics to grade how advanced prostate cancer is, with a score of eight or above, meaning the condition is at an advanced stage.
The mystery behind the statuses was cleared up on Reddit, where one user said he created the campaign.

But it’s not the first time Facebook icons have been used to spread awareness of cancer.
Last month, tens of thousands of women were sharing the red heart emoji to raise awareness of breast cancer.
